Is GTA 5 Crossplay? GTA Online Cross-Platform in 2026

No, GTA 5 and GTA Online are not crossplay in 2026. PlayStation players can only meet other PlayStation players, Xbox players other Xbox players, and PC players other PC players. Rockstar’s own support site spells out the PC side: players on PC cannot play with players on console. Within each family there are further walls, because the older and newer versions of the game do not share sessions either. Here is exactly who can play with whom, and what you can carry over.

Story Mode is single-player, so none of this affects it.

No crossplay between PlayStation, Xbox and PC

GTA Online has never had cross-platform play between console families, and Rockstar has not announced any plan to add it. On the PC side, the rule is written down. In a support article about the Xbox app on PC, Rockstar says cross-network play only covers gameplay between PC platforms, and adds: “Players on PC cannot play with players on console.”

That same article is the good news for PC players: it does not matter where you bought the game. Steam, Epic Games, the Rockstar Games Launcher and the Xbox app on PC all play together, as long as everyone allows cross-network play in their settings (on the Xbox app, the Xbox privacy option “You can join cross-network play” has to be set to Allow).

The generation split on consoles

The real trap is inside each console family. GTA Online on PS5 and GTA Online on PS4 are two separate games as far as matchmaking is concerned, and the same goes for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. As GamesRadar explains, a PS5 player running the PS5 version only meets other PS5-version players.

There is a workaround. A PS5 can run the PS4 version through backward compatibility, and in that case it matches with PS4-version players. The same works for the Xbox One version on a Series X|S. Since June 18, 2026, the choice is easier to make: anyone who owns GTA 5 on PS4 can download the PS5 version for free, as can owners of the digital Xbox One version. Xbox One disc owners are the exception, because of platform limitations.

The PC split: Enhanced and Legacy

PC has its own version of the same problem. Since the free upgrade of March 4, 2025, there are two PC versions, GTA V Enhanced and GTA V Legacy. Rockstar was explicit at launch: players on Legacy are separate from those on Enhanced, so friends have to be on the same version to play together. Our Enhanced vs Legacy guide helps you pick.

What you can transfer

Crossplay does not exist, but moving your character does, within limits:

• PS4 or Xbox One to PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. A one-time migration carries over characters, GTA$, progression, stats, vehicles, properties, weapons, clothing and player-created jobs. It can even cross families, for example from PS4 to Xbox Series X|S, but purchased GTA$ only move within the same family (PS4 to PS5, Xbox One to Xbox Series). Earned GTA$ always transfer.
• Your old profile stays. At first a migration deleted the last-generation profile. Rockstar changed that, and its support page now says the migrated profile is retained on PS4 or Xbox One. Progress made on the two generations afterwards is not synced.
• Console to PC, or PC to console: impossible. Rockstar states that progress cannot be migrated between PS4 or Xbox One and PC.
• PC Legacy to PC Enhanced: your Story Mode and Online progress can be migrated when you upgrade.
• Story Mode saves can be uploaded from PS4 or Xbox One and downloaded on the new console, one save per platform, available for 90 days.
• PS3 and Xbox 360: nothing. When GTA Online shut down there, Rockstar confirmed there was no way to transfer characters or progress from those consoles.

A migration needs a Rockstar Games account signed in on the new console, and not every profile qualifies: Rockstar lists suspended or banned accounts, and profiles with illegitimate or insufficient progress, among those that can be refused. If your crew is split across generations, the free upgrade plus a migration is the cleanest way to get everyone into the same sessions.

Will GTA Online ever get crossplay?

Nothing suggests it. Rockstar has spent 2025 and 2026 bringing the PC version up to the console one and making the console upgrade free, not merging player pools, and its attention is on Grand Theft Auto VI, out November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
