2013: PS3 and Xbox 360
Rockstar announced the game on October 25, 2011, and showed the first trailer a week later. The original target was the second quarter of 2013; the game slipped to September 17 so the team could polish it further. It launched on that date on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 only.
GTA Online was not playable on day one. It launched two weeks later, on October 1, 2013, and its first days were rough: players reported connection problems and freezes on loading screens until Rockstar patched it.
2014 and 2015: PS4, Xbox One and PC
Rockstar announced a re-release for PS4, Xbox One and PC at E3 2014. It was more than a port: longer draw distances, finer textures, denser traffic, better weather effects, new wildlife and vegetation, and a first-person view that forced the team to rework the animation system.
The console versions arrived on November 18, 2014. PC was originally meant to launch alongside them, then slipped several times; Rockstar said it needed more time for polish. It finally came out on April 14, 2015, with 60 frames per second at 4K for machines that could handle it, and the Rockstar Editor for capturing and cutting gameplay videos.
2022: PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
The new-generation version was announced in June 2020 and dated for March 2022 in September 2021. It was released digitally on March 15, 2022, with physical copies following in April, according to Rockstar. The main additions were three graphics modes with up to 4K resolution, 60 frames per second and ray tracing, faster loading, and DualSense haptics on PS5. Our PS5 vs PS4 comparison goes through every difference.
The same day, GTA Online was sold as a standalone game for the first time, and it was free to keep on PS5 until June 14, 2022. It arrived with an exclusive new feature, Hao’s Special Works, for tuning vehicles at the LS Car Meet.
Three months earlier, on December 16, 2021, Rockstar had switched off GTA Online on PS3 and Xbox 360, after stopping Shark Card sales there on September 16. Story Mode on those consoles was not affected, but characters still on that generation were lost to online play: Rockstar’s FAQ confirmed there was no way to transfer them before the shutdown.
2025: GTA V Enhanced on PC
On March 4, 2025, PC players received a free upgrade called GTA V Enhanced, bringing the console features to PC: Hao’s Special Works, ray traced shadows and reflections plus PC-only ray traced ambient occlusion and global illumination, DLSS and FSR support, and DirectStorage loading. The original PC version stayed available under the name GTA V Legacy for machines below the new requirements. The two versions do not share online sessions, a split our Enhanced vs Legacy guide explains in full.
How long each platform waited
Counting from the original release, PS4 and Xbox One owners waited 14 months for their version, PC players 19 months, and the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S version arrived eight and a half years after the first. PC players then waited three more years, until March 2025, for the features consoles got in 2022. Few games have been sold to the same audience across so many machines, and each move was also a chance for GTA Online to pick up new players.
2026: free upgrades and the handover to GTA 6
On June 18, 2026, Rockstar made the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions a free upgrade for anyone who owns GTA 5 on PS4, disc or digital, and for owners of the digital Xbox One version. Xbox One disc owners are not eligible because of platform limitations. At the same time, GTA 5’s Story Mode joined the GTA+ Games Library for members.
The game has not stopped growing either. GTA Online’s summer update, The Kortz Center Heist, arrived on July 14, 2026, on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC.
Next comes Grand Theft Auto VI, set for November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S; our GTA 6 release date guide tracks everything confirmed. By then GTA 5 will have been on sale for more than 13 years across three console generations, which is also why its sales figures are in a league of their own. For a look at the state it all happens in, our 3D map of Los Santos and Blaine County covers every landmark.
