How Many Copies Has GTA 5 Sold? Every Official Figure

By ALLGTA World Staff · September 30, 2026

GTA 5 has sold-in over 230 million units worldwide. That is the latest official figure, from Take-Two Interactive’s quarterly report for the three months ended June 30, 2026, published in August 2026. The same filing puts the whole Grand Theft Auto series at over 470 million units. The game has now been on sale for 13 years, across three console generations and PC.

The latest official figure

Take-Two, Rockstar’s parent company, updates GTA 5’s lifetime number in its quarterly filings and earnings calls. The figures to know, all from the report covering April to June 2026:

TitleUnits sold-in (Take-Two)
Grand Theft Auto Vover 230 million
Grand Theft Auto seriesover 470 million
Red Dead Redemption 2more than 85 million

Two things to keep in mind when reading those numbers.

Sell-in, not sell-through. Take-Two counts units sold into the market, including digital sales, rather than copies registered by players. It is the standard measure for publishers, and it is the only one Take-Two publishes for GTA 5.

“Over” is a floor. Take-Two reports round milestones, so a move from “over 225 million” one quarter to “over 230 million” the next tells you the game crossed 230 million in between, not that it sold exactly five million.

The next chance for an update is Take-Two’s fiscal second-quarter report, covering July to September 2026. Updated October 21, 2026: Take-Two announced on October 13 that it will report those results on Monday, November 9, 2026, ten days before GTA 6 launches.

The launch: records that still stand out

GTA 5 launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on September 17, 2013. Take-Two announced the next day that first-day sell-through had passed 800 million dollars worldwide. On September 20, it announced more than 1 billion dollars in retail sales in three days, which it described as the fastest any entertainment property, games and films included, had reached that milestone.

Guinness World Records confirmed the numbers on October 8, 2013: 11.21 million units and 815.7 million dollars in the first 24 hours, and 1 billion dollars by September 20. The game took six sales records, plus a seventh for its trailer:

  • best-selling video game in 24 hours
  • best-selling action-adventure video game in 24 hours
  • highest grossing video game in 24 hours
  • highest revenue generated by an entertainment product in 24 hours
  • fastest video game to gross 1 billion dollars
  • fastest entertainment property to gross 1 billion dollars
  • most viewed trailer for an action-adventure video game

From August 2025 to August 2026, the figures rise by about five million units per quarter, a pace few games reach in their launch year, let alone their thirteenth.

Why it keeps selling

It was re-released three times, then upgraded for free. After PS3 and Xbox 360, GTA 5 came to PS4 and Xbox One on November 18, 2014, to PC on April 14, 2015, and to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on March 15, 2022. On PC, the free Enhanced upgrade followed on March 4, 2025 (see our Enhanced vs Legacy guide). Each release brought in new buyers and, often, returning ones. The full timeline is in our GTA 5 release date guide, and our PS5 vs PS4 comparison explains what the last console upgrade changed.

GTA Online comes with it. Take-Two describes GTA 5 as including access to GTA Online. A copy of GTA 5 is the entry ticket to a mode Rockstar has updated with new heists, businesses and vehicles for over a decade, and Take-Two again listed the Grand Theft Auto series among the largest contributors to its net bookings in its August 2026 results.

How it compares

  • Within the series: at over 230 million out of over 470 million, GTA 5 accounts for roughly half of all Grand Theft Auto sales.
  • Within Rockstar: Red Dead Redemption 2, released in 2018, stands at more than 85 million.
  • Across the industry: on Wikipedia’s list of best-selling video games, GTA 5 is second, behind Minecraft.

What it means for GTA 6

GTA 5’s sales set the scale for its successor. Take-Two’s fiscal 2027 outlook of 8.0 to 8.2 billion dollars in net bookings, reiterated in August 2026, was built around the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Our GTA 6 release date guide tracks every dated commitment, and the editions and pre-order guide covers what is on sale.

We will update this page each time Take-Two publishes a new figure.
