GTA 5 Map: Every Region of Los Santos and Blaine County

By ALLGTA World Staff · September 30, 2026

The GTA 5 map is a single island at the southern tip of the fictional state of San Andreas, split into two counties: Los Santos County, home to the city of Los Santos in the south, and Blaine County, the desert, farmland, forest and mountains that fill the north. Everything in the story and in GTA Online happens there, apart from two places loaded separately: North Yankton in the prologue and the island of Cayo Perico in GTA Online. Our interactive 3D map of GTA 5 shows every region below, with 554 markers you can filter.

Los Santos, district by district

Los Santos is Rockstar’s Los Angeles, and the name is the joke: the saints instead of the angels. The city occupies the southern third of the island, bounded by the Pacific to the west and south and by the Tataviam Mountains and Palomino Highlands to the east.

DistrictReal-world modelWhat you find there

Pacific Bluffs, Banham Canyon and ChumashPacific Palisades, Topanga and MalibuThe Kortz Center museum on its hill, the coast road north, Chumash and its pier

Two details are worth knowing before you drive around. Del Perro, Rockford Hills and Davis are separate cities inside Los Santos County in the game’s lore, just as Santa Monica, Beverly Hills and Compton are in Los Angeles County. And the Kortz Center, the game’s Getty Center, is no longer only scenery: since July 14, 2026 it is the target of The Kortz Center Heist in GTA Online.

Blaine County

North of the Vinewood Hills and the Great Chaparral, Route 68 marks the county line, and Blaine County takes over. It is a mix of several real Southern California counties: the desert around the Alamo Sea recalls Imperial and Riverside counties, the north-west coast Ventura County.

The Grand Senora Desert and the Alamo Sea. The desert fills the middle of the island, with the wind farm, the Palmer-Taylor Power Station on the east coast and Bolingbroke Penitentiary, the prison broken into in GTA Online’s The Prison Break. The Alamo Sea, the huge inland lake, is the game’s Salton Sea, and Stab City, the trailer camp on its west shore, is its Slab City.

Sandy Shores. Trevor’s town, on the south shore of the Alamo Sea, with his trailer and the airfield that becomes the base of Trevor Philips Industries. Rockstar North’s art director Aaron Garbut has said the team built it after reference trips to the Salton Sea and Bombay Beach.

Grapeseed and Harmony. Grapeseed is the farming town north-east of the Alamo Sea, modelled on the Bakersfield area, with McKenzie Field’s airstrip and the O’Neil farm. Harmony is a handful of buildings on Route 68.

Paleto Bay. The small coastal town at the top of the island, on the Great Ocean Highway. Its Blaine County Savings Bank is the target of The Paleto Score. GTA Wiki compares it to Morro Bay on California’s Central Coast.

The west and the mountains. Fort Zancudo, the island’s only military base, sits by the Lago Zancudo swamps on the west coast. Our guide to Fort Zancudo covers how to get in and what you can steal there. Above it rise Mount Josiah and Raton Canyon. On the far side of the island, the east coast holds Mount Gordo and the El Gordo Lighthouse, the San Chianski Mountain Range and Humane Labs, the research facility raided in The Humane Labs Raid.

Mount Chiliad

Mount Chiliad is the highest point in San Andreas. A sign on the mountain claims 2,744 metres, but in the game’s own coordinates the summit sits at roughly 800 metres. An aerial tramway runs from Pala Springs to an observation deck at the top, and the mountain carries the game’s most famous unsolved mystery: a mural inside the cable car station, and the message “Come back when your story is complete” written on the back of the deck. Reach 100% completion and a UFO appears over the summit. Fly to Mount Chiliad on the 3D map.

How big is the GTA 5 map?

Rockstar has never given the map an area. The one comparison it made, in Game Informer’s December 2012 cover story, was that Los Santos is bigger than the worlds of Red Dead Redemption, GTA San Andreas and GTA IV combined, and that claim counts interior spaces as well as the outdoor map.

Every number in square miles comes from fans, and methods differ.

GameRockstar’s own figureFan measurement of total area
GTA IV (Liberty City)noneabout 16 km² (6.2 sq mi)
GTA San Andreasnoneabout 38 km² (14.8 sq mi)
GTA 5 (Los Santos and Blaine County)noneabout 76 km² (29.3 sq mi)

You will also see GTA 5 quoted at around 49 square miles. That figure is repeated widely, but without a published method, which is why it sits so far from the measurement above. Treat all of them as estimates. For the city that came before, our GTA 4 map guide covers Liberty City borough by borough.

Places that are not on the main map

North Yankton. The snowy state where the prologue’s 2004 bank robbery happens, in the town of Ludendorff. You return once, in the mission Bury the Hatchet. Only a small area around Ludendorff exists.

Cayo Perico. A private island in the Caribbean, off the coast of Colombia, added to GTA Online with The Cayo Perico Heist on December 15, 2020. You reach it by submarine, the Kosatka, and it is not accessible in story mode.

GTA 5 against GTA 6

Rockstar has not given Leonida an area either, only comparisons. The studio told the New York Times that the GTA 6 map is three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2, and that Vice City alone is roughly twice the size of Los Santos. Our GTA 6 map size guide explains what those comparisons do and do not tell you.

Frequently asked questions

What are the regions of the GTA 5 map?

The playable island is the southern tip of the state of San Andreas, split into two counties: Los Santos County, with the city of Los Santos in the south, and rural Blaine County in the north, which covers the Grand Senora Desert, the Alamo Sea, Sandy Shores, Grapeseed, Paleto Bay and Mount Chiliad.

How big is the GTA 5 map?

Rockstar never published an area. Its only official comparison, given to Game Informer in 2012, was that Los Santos, counting interiors and exteriors, is bigger than Red Dead Redemption, San Andreas and GTA IV combined. Fan measurements put the total area at around 76 square kilometres (29 square miles), and a higher figure of about 49 square miles is also widely repeated.

What is the highest point on the GTA 5 map?

Mount Chiliad, in the north of Blaine County. A sign in the game claims 2,744 metres, but the summit actually sits at roughly 800 metres in the game's coordinates. A cable car runs to the top.

Is Los Santos based on Los Angeles?

Yes. Los Santos is Rockstar's version of Los Angeles and its metro area, and the name is a play on it: Los Santos means the saints, Los Angeles the angels. Vinewood stands in for Hollywood, Del Perro for Santa Monica and Vespucci for Venice.
