How Big Is the GTA 6 Map? What Rockstar Actually Said
Search the size of the Grand Theft Auto 6 map and you will be handed a number within seconds. One hundred and eighteen square miles. One hundred and thirty-two. A hundred and twenty-five square kilometres. Two point four times GTA 5, or two point seven, depending on the page.
None of those numbers came from Rockstar. Here is what did.
The only sizing Rockstar has given
In previews published ahead of the Extended Look, Rockstar developers spoke to the New York Times and gave the map a size, but as a comparison rather than a measurement. The overall map, the studio said, is three times as large as the playable area of its previous game, Red Dead Redemption 2.
The same round of previews put a second comparison on the record: Vice City alone is roughly twice the size of Los Santos, the city at the centre of GTA 5.
Update, September 29, 2026: Game Informer’s cover story added a third comparison. Aaron Garbut, co-studio head at Rockstar North, called Leonida the biggest map Rockstar has made “by some degree” and twice as large as GTA 5’s, as reported by VGC. It is still a multiplier, not an area, and it sits comfortably with the other two.
Those statements are the whole of what Rockstar has said about scale. They are attributed to the studio, which makes them the strongest sourcing available, and they are worth more than they look. A comparison against two games whose worlds players have spent thousands of hours in tells you more about how Leonida will feel than a square-mileage figure ever could.
What that does not tell you
It does not give you an area. “Three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2” only converts into square miles if you already know Red Dead Redemption 2’s playable area, and Rockstar has never published that either. Every conversion rests on a community measurement of a previous game, which is then multiplied by three and presented as a fact about this one.
It also says nothing about how much of that surface is water. Leonida is a version of Florida: it has a coast on both sides, a chain of islands, and wetlands. A map three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s on paper could be considerably less than three times the drivable ground.
Where the circulating numbers come from
Two sources, mostly.
The first is community mapping. Volunteer projects have spent two years stitching together frames from the trailers, the Extended Look and the official screenshots, aligning them against known landmarks and scaling from objects of known size, such as vehicles and road markings. This is careful work and the people doing it are usually upfront that the output is an estimate with error bars.
The second is leaked footage, which is where the wider spread comes from. We cover what leaks contain when it is newsworthy, and we do not host them or treat their contents as confirmed. A number derived from a build that is years old and never shipped is not a fact about the game being released in November.
Both methods produce ranges. When a page presents one point from inside a range as the map size, the range is what got lost.
The comparison table, honestly labelled
| Game | Rockstar’s own figure | Community estimate |
|---|---|---|
| GTA 5 (Los Santos and Blaine County) | never published | around 49 square miles |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | never published | varies by method |
| GTA 6 (Leonida) | 3x the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2, 2x GTA 5 | 118 to 132 square miles |
The middle column is short for a reason. Rockstar has not given an area for any of its recent open worlds, which is itself the answer to why nobody can give you a reliable multiplier.
What we will publish, and when
We are not going to print a square-mileage figure that Rockstar has not given. On November 19, when the game is in players’ hands, the map becomes measurable rather than estimable, and that is when a number is worth publishing.
Until then, our interactive atlas of Leonida carries the six regions Rockstar has confirmed and the places it has named, with every marker labelled official or schematic so you can see which is which. The real map replaces it at launch.
If you want the rest of what is confirmed, the release date guide tracks every dated commitment, and everything we know is the full picture.
Frequently asked questions
Has Rockstar given the size of the GTA 6 map?
Not in square miles or square kilometres. The only sizing Rockstar has given is comparative: the studio told the New York Times the map is three times as large as the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2, and that Vice City alone is about twice the size of Los Santos. In September 2026, Rockstar North's Aaron Garbut added a third comparison in Game Informer: twice as large as GTA 5's map.
So how many square miles is Leonida?
Nobody outside Rockstar knows. Every figure in circulation, whether it is 118 square miles or 132 or 125 square kilometres, comes from community measurement of trailers, screenshots and leaked footage, not from Rockstar. Those methods disagree with each other by wide margins, which is why the numbers do.
Is GTA 6 the biggest map Rockstar has made?
By Rockstar's own comparison, yes. Three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2 puts it well beyond anything the studio has shipped, and beyond GTA 5's Los Santos and Blaine County.
How long does the story take?
Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, told the New York Times his own recent playthrough ran about 80 hours, covering the main story plus some optional objectives that carry narrative consequences.
