GTA 5 Missions: How Many There Are and the Full List
GTA 5 has 69 story missions according to its own completion checklist, from the Prologue in North Yankton to one of three endings. Fan lists that run to 73 or more are counting every heist approach and all three endings separately. You only play one version of each, which is why the checklist settles on 69. On top of the story come dozens of optional Strangers and Freaks missions, explained at the end of this guide.
Why mission counts disagree
Four heists let you choose an approach, and each approach has its own setup missions. The Jewel Store Job needs Carbine Rifles if you go loud, or Bugstars Equipment and BZ Gas Grenades if you go smart. The Big Score needs Stingers and Gauntlet for the Subtle approach, Driller and Sidetracked for the Obvious one. The story then splits three ways at the end. GTA Wiki notes that the checklist’s 69 also includes Lester’s five assassination missions for Franklin, only the first of which, The Hotel Assassination, is required by the story.
The list below shows every main story mission in the order GTA Wiki lays them out, which is also the order most players meet them. Many can be done in a different order, because several characters offer missions at the same time. Each character’s own missions, however, always come in this order.

Other side missions
Three more groups of missions sit outside the main list:
- Lester’s assassinations, for Franklin: The Hotel Assassination, The Multi Target Assassination, The Vice Assassination, The Bus Assassination and The Construction Assassination. They are tied to the stock market and are best left until after The Big Score.
- Family missions, for Michael: The Good Husband, Doting Dad and Parenting 101.
- Therapy sessions with Dr. Friedlander, also for Michael.
Strangers and Freaks, explained
Strangers and Freaks are side missions given by eccentric characters you meet around San Andreas. Each strand belongs to one protagonist and unlocks early: Franklin’s after Repossession, Michael’s after Complications, Trevor’s after Mr. Philips. GTA Wiki counts 24 for Franklin plus The Last One, 12 for Michael and 29 for Trevor, his five rampages included.
Only Franklin’s count toward 100% completion, and only 20 of them move the percentage, each worth 0.5%. Our GTA 5 100% checklist lists exactly which.
| Character | Protagonist | What the missions involve |
|---|---|---|
| Tonya Wiggins | Franklin | Five towing jobs; the first, Pulling Favors, is required by the story |
| Beverly Felton | Franklin | Paparazzo missions chasing celebrities |
| Dom Beasley | Franklin | Four extreme sports stunts; the last needs all 13 parachute jumps |
| Omega | Franklin | Collect the 50 Spaceship Parts, reward the Space Docker |
| Peter Dreyfuss | Franklin | A Starlet in Vinewood, after collecting all 50 Letter Scraps |
| Barry | All three | Grass Roots, a campaign for marijuana legalisation |
| The Epsilon Program | Michael | Eight cult missions; at the end you can steal $2.1 million |
| Nigel and Mrs. Thornhill | Trevor | Seven Vinewood Souvenirs missions stalking celebrities |
| Josh Bernstein | Trevor | Four jobs for a struggling real estate agent |
| Rampages | Trevor | Five: Rednecks, Vagos, Ballas, Military and Hipsters |
| The Last One | Franklin | Unlocked only after reaching 100% |
Strangers and Freaks can be finished after the story ends, but if your final choice kills Michael or Trevor, their unfinished strands are gone with them. None of theirs are needed for 100%.
Frequently asked questions
How many missions are in GTA 5?
The game's completion checklist counts 69 story missions. Longer lists you will find online, 73 or more, count every heist approach and all three endings separately, even though a single playthrough only uses one of each.
How many Strangers and Freaks missions are there in GTA 5?
GTA Wiki counts 24 for Franklin plus The Last One, 12 for Michael and 29 for Trevor, his five rampages included. Only Franklin's count toward 100% completion, and only 20 of them move the percentage.
What is the last mission in GTA 5?
It depends on your choice after The Big Score. Franklin can kill Trevor (Something Sensible), kill Michael (The Time's Come) or refuse both and take on everyone else (The Third Way). Each one is the final story mission.
Do you have to do Strangers and Freaks missions?
No, they are optional side missions. The exception is Pulling Favors, Franklin's first towing job for Tonya Wiggins, which the story requires. Franklin's other Strangers and Freaks missions are needed only for 100% completion.
