GTA 5 Money Cheat: Why There Isn't One and What Works
There is no money cheat in GTA 5. Rockstar left cash out of the cheat list entirely: none of the 34 button codes, PC console words or phone numbers touches your bank balance, in Story Mode or in GTA Online. What does make serious money in Story Mode is Lester’s assassination missions combined with the in-game stock market, followed by the heists and a few side jobs. In GTA Online the equivalent shortcuts, money glitches and “modded” lobbies, are what gets accounts suspended.
Why there is no code
The full GTA 5 cheat list covers invincibility, weapons, vehicles, weather and gravity, and stops there. IGN, PC Gamer and GamesRadar all say the same thing: there has never been a money code on any platform. In a game whose story is built around heists, the missing cash cheat is deliberate. Anything online that claims otherwise is a typo, a joke, or a link to a mod menu, and those last ones are not worth the risk.
The real fortune: Lester’s assassinations
Lester Crest gives Franklin five assassination contracts, and every target is tied to a company listed on the in-game stock market. Kill the target and a rival’s share price jumps; wait a few days and the victim’s own share price recovers. Invest before, sell at the peak, reinvest in the fallen stock, sell again.
| Mission | Buy before | Buy right after, sell on the rebound |
|---|---|---|
| The Hotel Assassination | Betta Pharmaceuticals (BET, BAWSAQ) | Bilkinton (BIL, LCN) |
| The Multi Target Assassination | Debonaire (DEB, LCN) | Redwood (RWC, LCN) |
| The Vice Assassination | Fruit (FRT, BAWSAQ) | Facade (FAC, BAWSAQ) |
| The Bus Assassination | nothing | Vapid (VAP, BAWSAQ) |
| The Construction Assassination | GoldCoast (GCD, LCN) | nothing |
Three rules turn that table into a fortune:
- Timing. The Hotel Assassination is part of the main story and cannot wait. The other four can, and GTA Wiki and IGN both recommend keeping them until after The Big Score and the ending, when all three characters have received their share of the final heist and have far more to invest.
- Everyone invests. Money is per character, so switch to Michael, Franklin and Trevor in turn and put each one’s full balance into the stock before the hit.
- Patience. LCN prices move with in-game time, BAWSAQ prices with real time. Rebounds can take several in-game days; sleeping in a safehouse moves the clock forward. Save before each assassination so you can reload if you miss the peak.
The biggest single swing is Redwood after the Multi Target Assassination: GTA Wiki and IGN both put the rebound at roughly 300%. The exact percentages you get will vary from game to game, which is why the peak is worth waiting for.
Mistakes that cost millions
- Doing the optional hits early. Played mid-story, the four optional assassinations multiply small balances. Played after the ending, they multiply the heist money.
- Forgetting the second trade. Selling the winning stock is only half of the job. The rebound of the stock you just crashed, Redwood, Facade, Bilkinton, is often the bigger gain.
- Holding too long. Prices peak and then fall back. GTA Wiki notes that Betta Pharmaceuticals starts dropping about 24 in-game hours after the Hotel Assassination, so check the portfolio as you pass time rather than sleeping through a week.
What is all that money for? Mostly the expensive properties that are otherwise out of reach, such as the Los Santos Golf Club or the cinemas Michael can buy.
The heists
The story heists, from The Jewel Store Job to The Big Score, are the other large payouts, and your planning choices change the size of your share. Every hired specialist takes a percentage: experts take more and fail less, cheap newcomers take less and can botch the job. A gunman or driver who survives a heist gains experience and asks for the same cut next time, so cheap recruits who make it out alive are the best value. The Big Score, the final one, targets the gold in the Union Depository in Downtown Los Santos, and its payout is what funds the late assassinations.
Smaller, reliable earners
- Properties. Businesses marked for sale around the map pay a weekly income straight into the owner’s account, and you need at least five of them for 100% completion.
- The Epsilon Program. In the last Epsilon mission, Unknowing the Truth, Michael can betray the cult and drive off with its $2.1 million.
- Random events and security vans. Robbing armoured vans and helping (or not) in random events pays small but steady sums, useful early in the game when the characters have little to invest.

GTA Online: no cheat, and glitches are bannable
GTA Online has no cheat codes at all. What circulates instead are money glitches, duplication tricks and “money lobbies” run with mod menus. Rockstar’s support site is explicit that these carry consequences: account suspensions are triggered by exploiting or abusing game mechanics, participating in money lobbies, account boosting, promoting methods of glitching and modding online games, among other breaches of its terms. Some accounts are corrected rather than suspended, which removes the illegitimately gained cash, rank, property or inventory. Bans, per Rockstar’s policy, have no expiry date.
The legitimate options are well documented and pay well: businesses, contact missions and above all the heists. The only official shortcut is paid: Rockstar sells GTA$ through Shark Cards, and sometimes runs bonus offers on them. Our GTA Online money guide ranks the ways to earn it by playing.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a money cheat in GTA 5?
No. None of the game's button codes, PC console words or phone numbers gives cash, on any platform. Any site or video promising a GTA 5 money code is either wrong or pushing a mod menu.
What is the fastest way to make money in GTA 5 Story Mode?
Lester's assassination missions played on the stock market. Do the Hotel Assassination when the story requires it, then keep the other four until after the final heist, when all three characters have their share to invest.
Can you get banned for using a money glitch in GTA Online?
Yes. Rockstar's support site lists exploiting game mechanics, money lobbies and promoting glitches among the reasons for suspensions and bans, and says some accounts are corrected instead, which removes the illegitimately gained cash.
Which stock pays the most in GTA 5?
Redwood, bought right after the Multi Target Assassination. GTA Wiki and IGN both put its rebound at roughly 300%, the biggest swing among Lester's jobs.
