GTA 5 RP: How FiveM Roleplay Works and How to Start
GTA 5 RP (roleplay) means playing GTA V on community-run servers where you create a character, a civilian, a criminal or a police officer, and stay in that role while other players do the same. It runs on FiveM, a free PC multiplayer framework made by Cfx.re, the team that officially joined Rockstar Games on August 11, 2023. You need a legitimate copy of GTA V on PC and the FiveM client. RP does not exist on PlayStation or Xbox.
What GTA RP actually is
Rockstar’s own description is a good one: roleplay turns GTA V into a community-run, multiplayer Los Santos where players create their own characters and tell their own stories. Some players hold down honest jobs, others chase scores, and a player-run police force tries to keep up.
It is not GTA Online. There are no missions handed out by Rockstar and no GTA$ economy shared with Rockstar’s servers. Each server writes its own rules, economy and scripts, and the draw is the story: long-running characters, relationships between players, and consequences that last.
FiveM, Cfx.re and Rockstar: the timeline
| Date | What happened | Source |
|---|---|---|
| August 11, 2023 | Cfx.re, the team behind FiveM and RedM, joins Rockstar Games | Rockstar Newswire |
| July 21, 2026 | FiveM for GTAV Enhanced enters early access, next to the Legacy client | Cfx.re forum |
| September 1, 2026 | Rockstar announces the nopixel V closed beta | Rockstar Newswire |
| September 8, 2026 | nopixel V closed beta opens to invited players via the Rockstar Games Launcher | Rockstar Newswire |
| September 10, 2026 | Rockstar publishes its Mod Guidelines, covering roleplay servers | rockstargames.com |
When it announced the Cfx.re deal, Rockstar said it had recently expanded its mod policy to officially include the roleplay creative community. RedM is the same team’s framework for Red Dead Redemption 2.
Rockstar’s support page on roleplay servers, updated September 15, 2026, now says Rockstar allows RP servers through its Creator Platform (FiveM’s terms are the Creator Platform License Agreement), provided they follow the Terms of Service and the Mod Guidelines.
What you need
- A PC. RP is PC only, on both the Legacy and Enhanced versions of GTA V. Not sure which one you run? Our Enhanced vs Legacy guide explains the difference.
- A legitimate copy of GTA V, fully updated. FiveM’s own documentation says it will not work with illegitimate versions of the game.
- The FiveM client, downloaded from fivem.net. It is free.
- A microphone. Most RP servers are voice-based.
- Patience. Many serious servers require an application or a whitelist before you can play.
How to start, step by step
- Install GTA V on PC and make sure it is fully updated.
- Install FiveM from fivem.net and let it locate your game. Enhanced support is still in early access, so check which version a server runs.
- Browse servers from the client’s server list, filtering for roleplay. Popular servers fill up; smaller ones are often easier for a first character.
- Read the rules and join the server’s Discord. This is where applications, whitelists and announcements live.
- Build a character, not an avatar: a name, a background and a reason to be in Los Santos.
- Start small. A legal job is the classic first step. It teaches you the server’s systems and the map, and it gives you people to talk to. Our interactive GTA 5 map helps with the geography.
The basic RP rules
Each server writes its own rulebook, and the names vary. These conventions come up on almost all of them:
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| In character / OOC | Stay in your role. Anything out of character goes in the channels the server sets aside for it. |
| Metagaming | Using information your character could not know, for example from a stream or a Discord chat. Forbidden. |
| Powergaming | Forcing an outcome with no chance for the other player to react, or doing something no real person could. Forbidden. |
| RDM | Random deathmatch: attacking someone with no story leading up to it. Forbidden. |
| VDM | Vehicle deathmatch: running people over with no roleplay behind it. Forbidden. |
| Fail RP | Anything that breaks immersion, such as acting as if the game had no consequences. |
| New Life Rule (NLR) | If your character goes down and is not revived, they forget the events that led to it. |
| Value of life | Your character wants to live: at gunpoint, you comply rather than play the hero. |
Break them and you can expect warnings, kicks or bans from the server’s staff. Server bans are separate from Rockstar’s own penalties.
Rockstar’s rules for servers
The Mod Guidelines published on September 10, 2026 apply to RP servers. Among other things, they:
- limit monetisation to storefronts approved through the Creator Platform;
- ban real-money gambling, loot boxes and the sale of in-game currency for real money;
- ban cryptocurrency and NFTs;
- forbid using other companies’ intellectual property, including brands, logos and real-world locations;
- forbid conflict roleplay or military simulations depicting real-world armed organisations;
- forbid suggesting that a server is endorsed by Rockstar.
These are rules for server owners, but they shape what players will find on the servers they join.
nopixel V: the first Rockstar-backed RP launch
For years, in Rockstar’s own words, nopixel “has set the standard for the genre”. On September 1, 2026, Rockstar announced its support for nopixel V, whose closed beta opened on September 8 to invited players through the Rockstar Games Launcher, not a separate client.
Rockstar lists a reworked character customisation system, a new Pixel Hotel & Casino, a six-block revamp of Cypress Flats, refreshed visuals, new ways to make a living and smarter pedestrians. Viewers could earn up to GTA$1,500,000 and the Burger Shot Tracksuit in GTA Online through Twitch Drops by watching nopixel V streams from September 8 to 30, 2026; that campaign is over. Rockstar said more news on expanded access would follow. Updated October 21, 2026: as of today, Rockstar’s Newswire has not posted any news on wider access.
Can you do RP on console, or in GTA 6?
Not on console: there is no FiveM or nopixel V for PlayStation or Xbox. GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026, and our GTA 6 Online guide tracks what Rockstar has confirmed about its multiplayer. If you want to change Los Santos on your own instead, start with our GTA 5 mods guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is GTA RP free?
The FiveM client is free to download, but you need a legitimate, fully updated copy of GTA V on PC. FiveM states that it does not work with pirated versions of the game.
Can you play GTA RP on PS5 or Xbox?
No. FiveM and nopixel V both run on PC only. GTA Online on consoles has no roleplay servers.
Is FiveM owned by Rockstar?
Yes. Rockstar announced on August 11, 2023 that Cfx.re, the team behind FiveM and RedM, had officially become part of Rockstar Games. Rockstar now calls FiveM its Creator Platform for multiplayer mods.
How do I join nopixel V?
For now you cannot simply download it. The nopixel V closed beta started on September 8, 2026 for invited players, who access it through the Rockstar Games Launcher. Rockstar has said more news on expanded access will follow.
