GTA 6 at 30fps: PS5, PS5 Pro and the 60fps Question

By ALLGTA World Staff · August 31, 2026

Rockstar has said one clear thing about how Grand Theft Auto VI runs, and left a great deal unsaid. Here is the line between the two, drawn from a single Eurogamer report and one detailed technical analysis.

What Rockstar told Eurogamer

Eurogamer reported that Rockstar says Grand Theft Auto VI runs at 30 frames per second, and that the studio is reportedly unsure whether it will deliver a 60fps performance mode alongside it. That is the extent of what Rockstar itself has communicated about frame rate, filtered through a single outlet’s reporting rather than a spec sheet or a press release. Rockstar has not addressed frame rate in any of its own written materials: no store page, no official FAQ, no developer blog. Everything past that one Eurogamer line is analysis from outside the building.

Updated October 21, 2026: the store pages now carry platform labels, PS5 Pro Enhanced on the PlayStation Store and Optimized for Xbox Series X|S on the Xbox Store, but still no resolution or frame rate. Rockstar’s site keeps its “Plays Best On PS5” badge without explaining it, a gap Digital Foundry itself flagged after the launch trailer.

What Digital Foundry measured

Digital Foundry, the outlet best known for frame-by-frame technical breakdowns of console games, ran its own analysis of the Extended Look footage released August 27. Its findings: an internal render resolution of roughly 1440p on base PS5, upscaled for output, holding 30 frames per second, with ray-traced reflections and ray-traced global illumination active throughout. That is a demanding visual target. Ray tracing of any kind carries a real performance cost on console hardware, and running two forms of it at once, reflections and global illumination, at a fixed 30fps suggests Rockstar spent its performance budget on fidelity rather than frame rate.

Digital Foundry’s conclusion, based on that analysis, was that a 60fps console performance mode looks very unlikely. That is Digital Foundry’s judgment, not a Rockstar statement.

Updated October 21, 2026: Digital Foundry analysed the 90-second launch trailer on October 16. Rockstar says it was captured in-game on a PS5, without naming the model; GameSpot reported a base PS5. The resolution again looks like 1440p upscaled to 4K. The good news is elsewhere: the uneven animation pacing that has affected Rockstar’s engine since GTA 4, and that Digital Foundry flagged in the Extended Look, did not show up, which may mean it has been fixed. Digital Foundry also leaned towards Sony’s new QSSR upscaler not being used, while admitting it could not tell for sure. A short, carefully shot trailer is not a frame rate test, so the 30fps reading stands.

Why 60fps looks unlikely, in one word: CPU

The bottleneck Digital Foundry pointed to is not the graphics chip. PS5’s GPU can be pushed to render at a lower resolution and hit 60fps in plenty of games; that trade-off is exactly what performance modes usually make. The harder limit is the CPU. Grand Theft Auto VI’s simulation load, two protagonists, dense city AI, the wanted system’s face and vehicle tracking, a living Leonida running underneath the visuals, appears to lean on the CPU heavily enough that halving frame time from 33 milliseconds to 16 is not simply a matter of lowering resolution. A game can drop every graphical setting it has and still be CPU-bound at 30fps if the simulation itself cannot keep up. That is the wall Digital Foundry’s reporting points to, and it is a wall that resolution tricks do not solve.

What PS5 Pro could, and could not, change

Rockstar has said nothing about PS5 Pro specifically, not a target resolution, not a frame rate. Updated October 21, 2026: one thing is now on the record from the platform side: the PlayStation Store lists the game as PS5 Pro Enhanced, which means there is Pro-specific work, without saying whether it is sharper image quality, extra ray tracing or something else. That silence is worth sitting with rather than filling in. PS5 Pro’s headline upgrades are a substantially stronger GPU and better ray-tracing hardware, exactly the kind of gains that would let a game hold a higher resolution or add more ray-traced effects at the same frame rate. What PS5 Pro does not meaningfully change is CPU power; Sony’s mid-generation refresh kept the same CPU architecture as base PS5, with only a modest clock bump. If Digital Foundry’s CPU-bound reasoning holds, PS5 Pro is positioned to make GTA 6 look sharper at 30fps, not to make it run at 60. Nothing from Rockstar confirms or denies that reading. It is inference from published PS5 Pro specifications, applied to Digital Foundry’s analysis of the base game, not a Rockstar statement about the Pro console.

The Xbox Series S question nobody has answered

Xbox Series S is a real gap in the public picture. It ships with roughly a third of Series X’s GPU power and less memory, and Rockstar’s past games, including the current-gen re-release of Grand Theft Auto V, have needed visible compromises to hit Series S. Nothing has been said, by Rockstar or by any outlet with hands-on access, about what resolution or frame rate GTA 6 targets on Series S. Given the CPU-bound picture Digital Foundry has already sketched for the more powerful PS5, Series S faces its own version of the same problem on top of a real GPU and memory deficit. Until Rockstar or a technical outlet addresses it directly, treat Series S performance as unknown, not merely unconfirmed. The Xbox Store’s Optimized for Xbox Series X|S label, checked on October 21, 2026, covers both consoles and says nothing about Series S targets. There is no PC version of GTA 6 announced either, so there is no PC benchmark to lean on for comparison.

What would actually change this picture

Three things would move this from analysis to fact. A direct Rockstar statement on frame rate, in writing, on the record, would replace the Eurogamer report as the primary source. A second Digital Foundry pass, on a longer or more recent build, closer to the November 19, 2026 release, would confirm or revise the 1440p and 30fps figures; the launch trailer pass confirmed the resolution but was too short and too cinematic to settle frame rate. And hands-on previews, or the game’s own performance-mode menu once players can see it directly, would settle the PS5 Pro and Series S questions that nobody outside Rockstar can currently answer. Preload opens November 12, a week ahead of launch; whether a day-one patch adjusts any of this is itself unknown.

Until one of those happens, the honest summary is this: Rockstar has confirmed 30fps through a single outlet, Digital Foundry has measured a visually ambitious build that a 60fps mode looks unlikely to fit, and PS5 Pro and Xbox Series S both remain open questions that nobody, including Rockstar, has closed.

Frequently asked questions

Does GTA 6 run at 30fps or 60fps?

Eurogamer reported that Rockstar says the game runs at 30 frames per second and that the studio is reportedly unsure whether it will ship a 60fps performance mode. Rockstar has not addressed frame rate in its own written materials.

What did Digital Foundry find when it analyzed the Extended Look footage?

Digital Foundry's analysis put the internal render resolution at roughly 1440p on base PS5, upscaled for output, running at 30fps, with ray-traced reflections and global illumination visible throughout. It judged a 60fps console mode very unlikely given the game's CPU demands. Its October 16, 2026 look at the launch trailer found the same 1440p upscaled to 4K, and no sign of the animation judder seen in earlier footage.

Will GTA 6 run at 60fps on PS5 Pro?

Nobody knows. As of October 21, 2026, the PlayStation Store labels GTA 6 PS5 Pro Enhanced, so Pro-specific improvements exist, but neither Sony nor Rockstar has said what they are. Digital Foundry's CPU-based reasoning for why 60fps looks unlikely would apply to PS5 Pro as much as base PS5, since the mid-generation console mainly boosts GPU power, not CPU headroom.

Is there a performance mode confirmed for Xbox Series S?

No. Nothing has been said publicly about Xbox Series S performance targets, by Rockstar or by outlets that have seen the game. Series S performance remains entirely unknown.
