Rockstar to the NYT: 80-Hour Story, Map 3x Red Dead 2

By ALLGTA World Staff · August 28, 2026

Hours before An Extended Look premiered on Netflix, the New York Times published the first on-record interviews with Rockstar developers since Grand Theft Auto VI was announced. Three numbers came out of it that Rockstar had never put on the record: a story that runs about 80 hours, a map three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2, and a Vice City twice the size of Los Santos.

The 80 hours

Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, told the Times that his own recent playthrough took about 80 hours. That covered the main story plus some of the optional objectives, which he described as carrying narrative consequences rather than being side content bolted on.

It is the first duration Rockstar has attached to the game. For scale, most estimates of Grand Theft Auto V’s main story land around 30 hours, and Red Dead Redemption 2’s around 50. Nelson’s figure is a single playthrough by one developer who knows the game, not a promise of what yours will take, but it is a number from inside the building.

The map, finally sized, sort of

The studio told the Times that the overall map is three times as large as the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2, and that Vice City on its own is roughly twice the size of Los Santos.

Those are the only two sizing statements Rockstar has ever made, and both are comparisons rather than measurements. They do not convert into square miles, because Rockstar has never published Red Dead Redemption 2’s area either. Our map size guide goes through why every square-mileage figure in circulation is a community estimate, and why we will not print one until the game is out.

Police that remember you

The detail that travelled furthest from the interviews was the wanted system. According to the Times’ account of the developers’ description, police now track you by a combination of your face, your clothing, your vehicle, and whether Jason and Lucia are together. Change enough of those and you shed the heat; keep them and you are recognised.

Press outlets present at Rockstar’s briefings the same day reported a six-star wanted level, up from five, and the ability to switch between the two protagonists mid-mission. Those details are consistent with the footage but were not in Rockstar’s written materials, so we treat them as accurately reported rather than confirmed in writing.

The interesting thing about the wanted system is not the sixth star. It is that the disguise mechanic turns Jason and Lucia's partnership into a liability: being seen together is itself evidence.ALLGTA World

The timing

The interviews landed the morning of the Extended Look and the day after Rockstar’s statement on the gameplay leaks, which called the leak heartbreaking for the team and confirmed the November 19 date was unaffected.

Read together, the week reads as a deliberate reset: a leak Rockstar did not control, followed within 48 hours by numbers, footage and interviews it did.

For the footage itself, see our page on An Extended Look. For what is confirmed in writing, everything we know keeps the line between the two.
