GTA 6 Age Rating: ESRB Mature 17+, PEGI 18, Australia R18+

By ALLGTA World Staff · October 2, 2026

Grand Theft Auto VI now has its age ratings, seven weeks before launch. The ESRB rates it M for Mature 17+, PEGI rates it 18 in Europe, and Australian store listings show R18+. The ratings themselves surprise nobody. The detail is in the descriptors, and in a PEGI page that was published on October 2 and quickly pulled.

ESRB: M for Mature 17+

The ESRB’s public database lists Grand Theft Auto VI on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series as M for Mature 17+, with seven content descriptors:

  • Blood and Gore
  • Intense Violence
  • Mature Humor
  • Nudity
  • Strong Language
  • Strong Sexual Content
  • Use of Drugs and Alcohol

It also carries the In-Game Purchases notice. The rating surfaced at the start of October: Vice reported on October 2 that Rockstar had started adding it to its promotional images. As of October 21, the same descriptors appear on the official site, under every GTA VI Newswire post, on the Xbox Store listing and on the US PlayStation Store page.

For comparison, the current ESRB entry for GTA 5 lists exactly the same seven descriptors. One difference is worth noting: GTA 5’s modern entries add a Users Interact notice, for online play, and GTA VI’s does not. That fits the single-player description Rockstar uses on both console stores. It does not rule out a later online mode: a rating covers the product as submitted, and GTA Online itself arrived two weeks after GTA 5 in 2013.

PEGI: 18, and a page that disappeared

In Europe the game is PEGI 18. The PlayStation Store in France shows the PEGI 18 badge with four descriptors: drugs, sexual content, violence and in-game purchases.

PEGI’s own website went further, briefly. According to VGC, a detailed PEGI listing went up on Friday, October 2, and was quickly removed. Before it came down, it described violence that is bloody and highly realistic, including “detailed decapitation and dismemberment”, drug use that is frequent and prominent, with cocaine that can be taken at any time, nudity, scenes of intercourse and occasional sexual fetishes, and private dances in clubs. It also said animals can be harmed, without the injury detail applied to people.

That text was published by a ratings body, not leaked, which is why the press could report it. It is also no longer online: a search of PEGI’s database on October 21 returned no entry for GTA VI. Treat the specifics as reported, not as Rockstar’s description of its game.

Australia: R18+

Vice and GamesRadar+ reported that the PlayStation Store listings in Australia and New Zealand show the game as R18+ and specifically mention sex scenes. GTA 5’s Australian classification used a more generic sex descriptor. Outlets disagree on how much to read into that: GamesRadar+ took it as a sign of a more explicit game, Vice cautioned that the wording alone does not prove it.

What the ratings actually tell you

Very little you did not expect from a Grand Theft Auto game, and two useful things.

  1. This is an adult game, rated as one everywhere. The PlayStation Family app and Xbox family settings can block it by age rating; both store pages carry the full rating.
  2. The ratings are platform-specific. Every listing so far, ESRB included, covers PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series only. No PC version has been rated, which matches everything else in our GTA 6 PC guide.

What they do not tell you: how much of the content is optional, how explicit any scene is on screen, or anything about the story. For what Rockstar has actually confirmed, see everything we know about GTA 6, and for the practical details of release week, our launch day guide.
