Rockstar's New Mod Rules Claim a GTA 5 Switch Port
An unofficial port of GTA 5 to the original Nintendo Switch will not be released. Its lead developer, who posts as Mojso, announced on September 28 that his group, Paralympics Productions, shuts down on October 3, after what he describes as a cease-and-desist letter from Take-Two. It is the most visible test yet of Rockstar’s new Mod Guidelines, which explicitly forbid porting Rockstar games to platforms they were never released on.
What the new guidelines say
Rockstar published its Mod Guidelines in the Community Resources section of its site. The page is dated September 10, 2026, and was widely picked up around September 20. It covers Rockstar’s games in general and opens with a four word principle, “Respect Our Games”, followed by four sets of rules.
| Area | What the guidelines rule out |
|---|---|
| Rockstar’s worlds | Expanding or changing official storylines, missions or characters; combining maps, characters or assets from one Rockstar game into another; running a game on consoles or devices where Rockstar has not released it |
| Multiplayer | Multiplayer modding outside Rockstar’s licensed Creator Platform; cheat menus or any software that interferes with official online services |
| Other people’s rights | Third-party IP such as music, brands and real places; reusing or modifying voice performances from Rockstar games; using a real person’s voice, image or likeness without written permission |
| Community | Pornography, extremism, harassment, and roleplay or military simulations depicting real-world armed organisations |
| Money | Monetising mods outside the Creator Platform; real-money gambling, loot boxes and gacha; selling in-game currency; crypto and NFTs; sponsored mods |
The page ends by stating that the guidelines are not a license and that Rockstar can take down any mod at any time. The full legal terms sit in the Rockstar Games Terms of Service and the Creator Platform License Agreement.
The Switch port shuts down
Paralympics Productions had been showing clips of GTA 5 running on the original Switch for weeks, with a release promised within days. GamesRadar+ describes the project as built on Rockstar’s leaked code.
According to Kotaku, Mojso had taunted Rockstar about the new porting rule on September 20. On September 28 he announced the shutdown, thanked Take-Two for its mercy, and said he had received a cease-and-desist. He added that he will not publish the code or assets for others to continue, since that could turn a letter into a lawsuit.
Take-Two has not commented publicly. The letter is known only through the modder’s own posts, so treat its exact contents as unconfirmed.
AI voices: a streamer gets a call
The rule on real voices has already been applied too. Spanish outlets 3DJuegos and Movistar eSports report that Rockstar contacted the Spanish streamer IlloJuan about a mod in his modded GTA San Andreas series that used AI to imitate the voices of real people, including fellow streamer Ibai. He removed the stream and the related episodes from his channels.
What is still allowed
The guidelines do not ban modding. They set limits and point multiplayer projects to one place: Rockstar’s licensed Creator Platform, which means FiveM and RedM, run by Cfx.re, the team Rockstar brought in-house in 2023. Its license agreement carries the same September 10 date as the guidelines. That is where GTA 5 roleplay lives, and Rockstar is actively promoting it: on September 1 it announced nopixel V, a new version of one of the best known roleplay servers, with a closed beta from September 8 accessed through the Rockstar Games Launcher.
Single-player mods that stay within the rules, such as graphics or quality of life changes on PC, are not singled out. Online cheating is: the guidelines forbid creating, sharing or using cheat menus. Our GTA 5 mods guide and GTA 5 roleplay guide go further, and our comparison of GTA 5 Enhanced and Legacy on PC covers the two PC versions.
What it means for GTA 6
GTA 6 launches on November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S only, so modding it is not an immediate question. When a PC version does arrive, and none has been announced, these guidelines are the starting point. Our GTA 6 PC guide tracks every official statement on that front.
